Once again, Kindred Spirits is pleased to host Fred Presson of High On Kennels as the trainer for our
Annual Rattlesnake Avoidance Clinic.

Every year, numerous dogs fall victim to rattlesnake bites, resulting in significant pain, trauma, and illness, and sometimes death. The financial burden can range from $1,500 to $10,000, as we've heard stories of pet owners who have spent considerable amounts to save their dogs. While veterinarians offer a rattlesnake vaccination, it's important to note that it does not provide complete immunity, and affected dogs will still require anti-venom treatment.
Whether you live in an urban or rural setting, you are likely living close to rattlesnakes. Southern California’s beaches, foothills, mountains, canyon country, and deserts are all considered rattlesnake habitats. Urban development does not deter these creatures. While we may not want them in our yards, encounters are inevitable, as rattlesnakes are drawn to places with small rodents and vermin—lush landscapes and gardens are particularly appealing to these rodents. Rattlesnakes play a vital role in controlling these pests. Since we cannot—and should not—attempt to eliminate them, we need to learn to coexist, which involves being mindful of our daily activities.
Since we cannot-and should not-attempt to eliminate rattlesnakes, we need to train our pets to avoid them.
What to expect
Since rattlesnakes have a very distinctive odor from other snakes, the most effective method for teaching a dog to avoid them is to use live rattlesnake specimens. (The rattlesnakes that High On Kennels use have been safely neutralized to prevent bites.) Dogs are fitted with an electronic training collar and guided through the field where the rattlesnakes have been strategically placed. When the dog encounters a rattlesnake, the collar delivers a momentary, uncomfortable stimulus. This training method aims to create a negative association in the dog’s mind with the sight, sound, and scent of a rattlesnake, discouraging it from approaching or interacting with a rattlesnakes in the future. This process is repeated multiple times to ensure the dog recognizes the sight, sound, and smell of a rattlesnake. The training is relatively quick and you can expect to spend less than an hour at the clinic, if your dog doesn’t get it right away we will work with your pet until we are satisfied that it understands and is avoiding the snakes

A Final Note on Rattlesnake Avoidance Training and Trainers
In recent years, there has been a noticeable rise in individuals claiming to be rattlesnake avoidance trainers. When considering someone to train your dog, keep the following points in mind:
- Professional Experience: Are they experienced dog trainers, and for how long?
- Training Duration: How long have they been teaching rattlesnake avoidance specifically?
- Familiarity with Electronic Collars: Do they have substantial experience with electronic training collars? While these collars can be effective tools, improper use can lead to unnecessary stress for your dog.
- Use of Live Rattlesnakes: Do they utilize live rattlesnakes in their training? Nothing replicates the behavior and scent of a rattlesnake quite like the real thing.
- Insurance: Are they insured? High on Kennels is fully licensed and insured for your peace of mind.
